Boycott-the-Gap: ***Birth of a New Campaign!!!***
It's been 9 months since our last national/international newsletter! Many of the activists on this list have been involved in the anti-war movement--some as part of the MOURNING MOTHERS affinity group! With the U.S. OCCUPATION of Iraq, the Peace Movement is now entering a new phase, more overtly incorporating the anti-globalization issues that dominated the Save-the-Redwoods/Boycott-the-Gap (SRBG) agenda prior to the INVASION--specifically the corporate economic aggression that is destroying ...

Boycott the Gap -->>> MOMENT OF TRUTH <<<-- Protest the G8
We are at a MOMENT OF TRUTH in the campaign to save 235,000 acres of redwood forestland from the Fishers of Gap, Inc. The Fishers have begun negotiating with the federal government for an EXEMPTION from the ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT, that is, a LICENSE TO KILL endangered species and to destroy their habitat WITH IMPUNITY! This process is the prelude to FINAL LIQUIDATION & DEVELOPMENT. But the Fishers aren't even waiting for that on their Sonoma holdings--they have already begun the process of CO...

Boycott the Gap: WEF Report-back! Campaign Update! Call to Action!
It's been nearly three months since our last newsletter! New Year Greetings! This update comes on the heels of our TRIUMPHANT RETURN from the MASS PROTESTS at the WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM (WEF) summit in NEW YORK CITY earlier this month, and the news that, as of last week, GAP'S CREDIT RATING has been DEVALUED to JUNK-BOND status. ...We knew our Gap actions on Feb 1 and 2 in NYC were powerful, but hadn't expected results quite this quickly ;-)

>THIS IS IT!!! The Campaign Turning Point We've All Been Working For!!! GAP INC--the Largest Clothing Retailer in the US & 2nd Largest in the World--just announced a $178.8 MILLION DOLLAR LOSS this quarter (note Nordstrom and Kohl's posted gains, so it's not just the economy). In the aftermath of 911, many Americans are waking up and discovering for
the first time that we are in the belly of the beast--that our manic
consumerism in the Global North, particularly in the US, is fueling the
destruction of the planet and creating nations of slave laborers and

On April 21 there were over 200 protests throughout the Western Hemisphere

30,000--50,000 members of civil society at Quebec City--in the form of tear

SPECIAL EDITION: The Gap Fishers' Phony "Green Label" and the Scam of
As many of you know, the Fishers of Gap, Inc have bought a meaningless
"green label" for their forest destruction--from the Forest Stewardship
Council, private timber-friendly "certifiers," who meet in secret,
excluding the public, and base their certification on the mere PROMISE that
the logging company will phase out clearcutting, old growth logging,
herbicide use and other damaging practices SOME DAY. (No kidding--this is
what the FSC documents say!)

The Gap Fishers--with their 12.5 billion dollars--had been confident that
they could crush all opposition to their liquidation of the redwood forest

non-profits, they have put enormous resources into a greenwashing campaign,
they even may succeed in buying green-label certification...

DEMAND AMNESTY FOR WTO PROTESTORS!
Contact Seattle officials today!
The Seattle City Council is holding a hearing this Wednesday, December 8, beginning an investigation into charges of police brutality and other civil rights violations that occurred last week during the World Trade Organization (WTO) protests. Please contact City Council members and other officials and demand that all charges against peaceful protestors be dropped. See contact information for Seattle officials at the end of this article.
Over 600 peaceful WTO protestors were arrested during the police riots in Seattle, and kept in jail for 3 to 4 days without arraignment and without counsel. Most prisoners have been released, but many must return to Seattle for hearings on minor charges. The continued legal harassment of these people must be stopped. See this article for an eyewitness account of rampant police violence in Seattle. Witness in Seattle! Contact Seattle officials!

Boycott-the-Gap: Demo! Demo!! DEMO!!! DDDEEEMMMOOOOO!!!!!!
Forest Defenders Across the Land!
It's been nearly 6 weeks since our last newsletter--and a lot is happening:
New CA Dept of Forestry Director Andrea Tuttle is implementing her illegal
policy, "We will not disapprove any THPs!", and CDF is indeed approving one
devastating Timber Harvest Plan after another! It is clear that government
will not intervene in the whole-sale slaughter of our forests: The
corporations--with their imperative to exploit natural and human resources
to the hilt--have bought Republicans and Democrats alike, as witnessed most
recently by the passage of the Quincy Library Bill, CDF's approval on Sep 8
of one of the most notorious Timber Harvest Plans ever submitted (THP
1-97-445 MEN not only "takes" coho, it extiguishes the entire species in 150
sq. mi. region), and the efforts of California's Davis administration to
fast-track his new Forest Practice Rules package which weakens the existing
rules by allowing the killing of endangered species--as the US Fish and
Wildlife Service pointed out in no uncertain terms at the CA Board of
Forestry hearing on Sep 14!

first year as governor, Davis has amassed a war chest of campaign
contributions of some $6 million for FUTURE campaigns--now ain't
that comforting to the public?!)--but no matter, because the tides are
definitely turning: We are beginning to realize that WE HAVE THE POWER--to
reclaim our government, to reclaim our society, and to reclaim our Earth
from the big-money corporate despoilers. Get Ready.

Boycott-the-Gap Press Release: Fishers of Gap Inc. Denied Forest Certification!!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GAP FAMILY LOGGING COMPANY FAILS TO OBTAIN "GREEN" LABEL
o  Mendocino Redwood Company turned down by two private "green" label wood
products groups
o  Certifier groups ask MRC to "minimize" use of their name in publicity
o  How timber "certification" works.  It's paid for by the applicant.  No
documents available to the public.  All applicants accepted.
o  Watershed groups say clearcutting, herbicide use and logging old growth
should not be "certified" as "green" practices
"There can be no 'green' label on species extinction!"  --Norman de Vall
"Disclosure of the Fishers' financial contributions to the wood
certification groups must be a condition of application..." -Mary Bull
"The Fishers' logging company has been using the Forest Stewardship Council
name as 'cover' for clearcutting, herbicide use and logging of the last old
growth..."  -- Mary Pjerrou

URGENT ACTION ALERT: Your support needed in the Albion!
The conflict between the Fisher logging company, MRC, and concerned citizens over logging near slide areas in the Albion has further escalated! People are sitting in trees and protesting on the ground to stop MRC from cutting a grove that stands between a road slide and the river below.
