Dear Public Servants:

The coast redwood forests of Mendocino and Sonoma Counties, in northern California, are a natural resource of national and worldwide significance.  I oppose any further destruction of these forests by the Fisher family of the Gap clothing store empire and their Mendocino Redwood logging company.

In particular, I oppose granting this company an exemption from the Endangered Species Act (called an "incidental take permit") that will allow them to kill endangered species and destroy their last habitat in a vast area of over 200,000 acres of redwood forest.  Endangered species are already facing extinction in these forests, due to years of overlogging, and 350 new Fisher logging plans, many of which contain clear-cuts and toxic herbicide use. This destruction of public trust resources upon which we all depend--our water, air, wildlife, fish and trees--plainly violates the law and the common good.

I further oppose the Fishers' scheme to sell their over-logged Willow Creek forests to the state, at a cost to taxpayers that is at least six times what the Fishers paid for the land before they logged it.  I especially object to the Fishers retaining development rights in the adjacent forests, where they will be paid not to log.  The Willow Creek deal is an extraordinary environmental injustice, by which a timber company and its rich investors will be rewarded with multiple profits for destroying wild areas.

I urge you to deny these projects, and to choose the only alternative possible, which was proposed by Rainforest Action Network in March 2002:  The Fishers must stop logging all of these forests, and must conserve the forests for endangered species and for the benefit of all life on earth.

The forest resources that we all need to live are under massive worldwide assault.  The World Wildlife Fund predicts the end of all of earth's resources, and the death of the planet, by 2050 A.D., if present trends continue.  Deforestation is one of those dire trends.  It is causing the drought and famine that is sweeping through Central America right now (U.N. World Food Program).  It is a leading cause of the world water crisis (International Forum on Globalization), and is likely contributing to global warming.

It is well past time to stop this madness. We urge you to take the first courageous step, by giving the Fishers their only alternative:  generosity.
