I begin a painting with no definite preconceptions, but simply an impulse, a subliminal thought about color or space or form, an unarticulated desire. And an almost breathless excitement about the idea of doing a painting. From the first gesture, a dialog is initiated. My conscious intentions for inner light, for unexpected beauty, and a transrational rightness of things which can, if but for a moment, set one free.

Completion is recognizing I have arrived someplace real. Sometimes great effort and purpose are needed to help it all along. At other times, surrender is the whole of it. Intuition speaks through desire and openness, and through the love and mastery of materials.
