Forest Defenders, Far and Wide!

A quick addenda to the previous newsletter....

HOME DEPOT FOLLOW-UP!
*********************************
For those of you unable to participate in yesterday's demos... You can CALL Home Depot Consumer Relations at 800-553-3199 and leave a message saying that you will not shop Home Depot until they stop buying old growth products and Mendocino Redwood Products! Leave your name and contact info... (I participated in the SF demo in Colma and also left a message. I'll report on the demo--which was quite eventful--in next month's newsletter!)

Home Depot is the world's biggest retailer of old growth products. We were told yesterday that they sell MRC redwood at all 800 stores, as well. For more info, call RAN at 1-800-989 RAIN.

MRC MASS MAILING FOLLOW-UP!
*****************************************
Our terrific Chicago Gap-Picket-Day Organizer, Jenny Ohlson, has a G-R-E-A-T idea for a COUNTER-CAMPAIGN to MRC's recent mass green-wash mailing:

*...write a letter back to the fishers on the backside of the original letter (even make an envelope out of the other two sheets!) telling them that sending out these letters is useless and that you haven't been convinced... People are more informed than they think and these ridiculous letters haven't swayed anyone... Mention their absurd hypocrisy in claiming not to be environmentally destructive and then mailing out these letters, on three sheets and an envelope in what is probably not recycled paper, to everyone who signed their petitions--thats a pretty big waste!*

You might even say that *Greenwashing campaigns such as this only makes us escalate our efforts to stop your rapacious destruction in Mendocino!*

WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO TAKE JENNY'S ADVICE
(including the envelope)!!! THANK YOU, JENNY!!!

MORE ON OUR RECENT WIN IN SUPERIOR COURT
************************************************************
Evidently, the Superior Court Judge (Bruce Watson), who ruled against the CA Dept of Forestry (CDF) and Pacific Lumber (P-L) last week, is typically unsympathetic toward environmentalists. What made this case different? The individual who sued CDF and P-L, Michael Evenson, is a cattle rancher--and ranchers in the Timber Wars have typically been pro-timber. Further, this rancher sued pro per--without an attorney.

This was a great victory for the people and the environment!

THREE CHEERS FOR MICHAEL EVENSON!!!

By the way, Superior Court decisions do not set precedents--the Appellate Court does. Since the facts of this case appear to be very strong, P-L and CDF probably will not appeal it--for fear of setting a precedent. Speaking of which....

APPELLATE COURT RULING IN OUR FAVOR!!!
*******************************************************
Last week the state Appellate Court ruled in favor of RCWA!!! Circa 1996, the Redwood Coast Watersheds Alliance (RCWA) won a suit against the California Board of Forestry, in which the court ruled that the B of F had to define sustained yield RULES in support of its sustained yield mandate. Then AG, Dan Lungren--an integral part of a pro-timber administration--immediately filed an appeal. Justice Klein made it clear on December 17 at the appellate court hearing that he found the appeal unmeritorious--and last week he ruled in favor of RCWA!!!

Further, on the prompting of state Senator Byron Sher, the case will be *published* and used as a precedent from this day forward!

RCWA is a Mendocino non-profit that watchdogs logging operations in Mendocino and tries desperately to protect--through litigation and restoration--our public trust resources in Mendocino. Mary Pjerrou, one of the launchers of the Save the Redwoods/Boycott the Gap Campaign, is President of RCWA.

THREE CHEERS FOR OUR COURAGEOUS RCWA!!!
