Forest Defenders, Far and Wide!
Forgive the number of urgent emails of late--but the situation is escalating. There are very few vestiges of true old-growth forest left on the Mendocino Coast, and THP 315 Amendment #10 proposes to destroy one of them! (see http://www.elksoft.com/gwa/photos for pics of this rare, beautiful forest! More are coming!)
If you love the forest--if you feel that the last vestiges of ancient forest should be preserved in Mendocino--please make a small but important effort to save this one: PLEASE communicate the following message via phone, fax, or snail-mail to Andrea Tuttle, the newly appointed Director of the CA Dept. of Forestry, ASAP:

Re: THP 1-95-315 MEN, Amendment #10
Dear Andrea Tuttle,
You have been appointed by a governor who said there should be no more old growth logging in California.
THP 1-95-315 MEN contains some of the very last old growth forest on the Mendocino Coast. These old growth trees are about to be clearcut through a hasty amendment "Amendment #10" to this plan.
Amendment 10 changes a low-impact "commercial thinning" plan with helicopter logging into a high-impact plan with strip clearcuts ("group selection") targetting old growth trees and fragmenting wildlife habitat without the appropriate surveys. Environmentalists say that the area possesses all the characteristics of a late succession forest. Wildlife experts have said that this forest is good marbled murrelet habitat.
The local community, whose town water supply is at risk, fought for the low impact plan with protests and lawsuits back in 1995. Now the new owners are completely changing the plan with this terrible amendment.
CDF is scheduled to approve the plan imminently. If you and the governor are sincere about wanting to preserve old growth, PLEASE, start your new job by disapproving this plan!
Sincerely,
Your name and address here.
If you have the time, please cc: your response to CDF:CDF, Forest Practice, 135 Ridgeway Avenue/P.O. Box 670, Santa Rosa, California 95402, voice (707) 576-2959, fax (707) 576-2608
