Northern California Forest Defenders!

We've gotten an Easter weekend reprieve--at least on one front:

****CDF has said that they will not be approving THP 1-95-315 MEN Amend. #10 today, as the letter from Fish and Wildlife addressing the marbled murrelet habitat issues is not yet in. This Fisher family/MRC amendment is the one that proposes to clearcut 15 strips of the Greenwood Creek watershed, effectively removing the last of the old growth and late succession forest in the watershed.****

Protests planned for this weekend, regarding this THP, have been postponed! Those of you G-R-E-A-T SPIRITS who were at-the-ready to dash to Mendocino this holiday weekend to help save this beloved forest, THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! We will keep you posted: the THP could be approved any time after the FWS letter arrives--as soon as Monday of next week (but most likely, Friday). Those of you who couldn't make it this weekend but who had the desire (expressed or unexpressed) to help at a later date, we hope that you will join us when the time is at hand, quite possibly next weekend!!!

*****The status of other Fisher/MRC logging plans is unknown: LINDA PERKINS (an incredible THP analyst, Mendocino County activist, and member of the RCWA Board) of the Albion River Watershed Protection Association (ARWPA) was in court in Ukiah this morning on THP 350, one of eight Fisher/MRC THPs targeting the last vestiges of the ancient forest and late succession habitat in the Albion River watershed--this watershed contains the highest percentage of big trees on all the Fishers' holdings.

Linda's lawsuit charges CDF with criminal conspiracy (GO, LINDA!!!); the judge is taking the case under advisement. Linda and other key Mendocino activists have not been available to give us status on the current in-progress logging operations. As soon as I get it, I will convey it to the network, or you can call Mendocino Environmental Center for the latest status: 707-468-1660.

*****I believe that there are going to be protests in Humboldt this weekend with regard to THP 1-97-520 HUM, the controversial 705-acre logging plan on a steep hillside above the South Fork Elk River; the harvest area is surrounded by the new Headwaters Preserve and will undoubtedly affect the wildlife in the Preserve, as well! Call BACH for more info: 510-835-6303 or 510-548-3113.

*****Easter greetings to Gray Davis and Andrea Tuttle should include reminders that Davis said there should be no more cutting of old growth. (Gov. Gray Davis: State Capitol Building, Sacramento 95814; CDF Dir. Andrea Tuttle, 1416 Ninth St., Sacramento 95814)
