Bay Area and North Coast FDs!

A quick update!

--We have another week's reprieve on THP 315: CDF has postponed its decision another week, due to marbled murrelet and spotted owl issues! HALLELUIA! We're still hanging on a cliff, here, at the mercy of the state agencies, but at least the beloved old growth of Greenwood Creek STILL STANDS! I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED FOR POSSIBLE ACTION NEXT FRIDAY! Endless Thanks, Dedicated Forest Defenders, for keeping at-the-ready!

--Mary Pjerrou has been working HARD behind the scenes to get the Davis administration to ACT NOW in defense of Mendocino forestlands! And I just found out from PETE HARRISON at FORESTS FOREVER that they supported our last call-to-action like GANGBUSTERS--evidently, the faxes and letters were flying! THANK YOU, FO-FO, FOREVER!!!!!!

--SPARKS FLEW at the KQED Board meeting yesterday, when Mark Hilovsky and I denounced Don Fisher to the Board of Directors for gross corporate irresponsibility, specifically for the Fisher family's liquidation logging of the redwood forest in Mendocino, the Gap's exploitation of garment workers in Saipan, and Fisher's personal crusade for the corporatization of public parks, public schools, and public television. (Don Fisher is vice-chair of the KQED Board, the public television station in the Bay Area.) About 30 people were present. Jerome Falk, the Chairman, nearly broke his gavel during a blustery defense of crony Fisher, who didn't show for the meeting. Board member Shelley Kessler (AFL-CIO) set Falk straight after the meeting when she told him that Gap labor exploitation is no joke. THREE CHEERS FOR SHELLEY!

...and sincere hopes that KQED gets on track! WHEW! They are really going corporate: talking about KQED "brand recognition," QUANTIFYING the criteria by which they choose what show to buy or produce ("getting scientific"), and focusing primarily on their top-heavy organization, not on the creative direction or content of the station! REALLY DEADENING STUFF...sad to report, but not surprising.

--Fo Fo activist ERIC BROOKS and I will be holding the joint-issue banner at the flagship Gap at 12 NOON tomorrow (Powell and Market, SF)! I'll bring leaflets and clipboards. PLEASE JOIN US FOR AN EMPOWERING AFTERNOON OF ACTIVISM!!! WHOOPEE!!!!!!

Cheers and many thanks for believing in things that our bigger than ourselves (like giant redwoods)!!!
