APRIL 11 PROTEST ACTION AT THE GAP ON 5TH AVENUE

-- Plight of the Redwoods Second Tour Launched -

On Sunday, April 11, New York City Forest Defenders protested the destruction of California's redwood forests by the Fisher family with all day picketing and leafleting at the Gap on 5th Avenue. Mendocino forest activists Redwood Mary, who has taken the Plight of the Redwoods Tour to the east coast for a second round of public presentations and media interviews (with Julia Buttlerfly via cell phone), reports that hundreds of leaflets were distributed to 5th Avenue shoppers protesting the clearcutting of redwood forests and logging of old growth in northern California by the Fisher family, and answering Gap propaganda that the Gap has nothing to do with the logging company. (The Fisher family controls both Gap, Inc., and the Mendocino Redwood Company. Both are part of the Fishers/Gap empire. The Fishers' profit expectations from logging of the last old growth trees on the Mendocino coast, clearcutting fragile watersheds and harming endangered species, are driving decisions at the logging company.)

The 5th Avenue Gap logging protesters received enthusiastic responses from shoppers, several of whom took clothes back into the store and got their money back, and others who honored the picket line and didn't go in to shop. Protest signs were created by the artists and activists at the Wetlands Cafe who organized the protest.

Deepest thanks from Mendocino Forest Defenders to the folks in New York City! Only with your help - and those of people across the nation - will these severely overcut and precious redwood forests be saved.
