MAY DAY EXTRAVAGANZA: 2000 CHANT TO SAVE REDWOODS!
****************************************************************************
In the Parade that ended the San Francisco Take Back May Day Festival
Saturday, 2000 REVELERS stopped in front of the Gap store at Duboce and
Market and chanted

Mr. Fisher, you have a store--
What do you want the redwoods for?!

IT WAS GLORIOUS!!! There were so many anti-Gap placards and banners (both
labor and environment) in the parade, that it looked like one big Gap
protest--the BIGGEST GAP PROTEST TO DATE! At the Parade Stop in front of the
Gap, our banners (The Redwood Forest Is in Your Hands and Gap Exploits
Workers and Redwoods) flanked a GIANT PUPPET ridiculing Gap founder and
Chairman of the Board, Donald Fisher, while the crowd shouted anti-sweatshop
and anti-logging slogans.

Once again, special thanks and love to forest defender BETTY BALL in CO for
our crowd-pleasing chant--they truly loved it! ...Enormous hugs to members
of the Bay Area Core Group who toted those banners in strong winds and
leafletted the onlookers! And much gratitude and admiration to Art and
Revolution and the Reclaiming Collective for organizing/sponsoring this
splendid event!

THE FISHERS FILE NEW CLEARCUT PLANS!!!
*****************************************************
The GOOD STEWARDS just filed the following plans:

-1-99-127 MEN. 103 acres. clearcut-type in upper Greenwood.
-1-99-141 MEN. 81 acres. clearcut-type in Elk Creek.
(This makes clearcut no. 6 in Elk Creek in 2 yrs.)
-1-99-135 MEN. 59 acres in the Navarro. According to the THP, contains
mostly second-growth with a light canopy of old growth--6 or 7 old-growth
trees per acre (sounds like a rare pocket of marbled murrelet (MAMU)/spotted
owl habitat--we'll find out!), slated for *alternative prescription*--which
is a euphemism that the Fishers' logging company, MRC, often uses for
CLEARCUT.
-1-99-100 SON. Calls for 80 stream crossings!

We'll keep you posted on these... Thus far, we have effectively blocked the
following plans (keep your fingers crossed!):

-1-95-315, Amendment 10. CDF approval of this Fisher plan to take out the
last of the old growth in Greenwood Creek watershed has been delayed due to
our reconnaissance photos showing good MAMU habitat, orders from Sacramento
to take cumulative effects seriously in Mendocino County (?!), and a lot of
letters from you! THANK YOU!!! Meanwhile, we are preparing a lawsuit to
permanently block this plan!

-1-98-350. This Fisher plan that targets old growth and mature second growth
in the Albion is the one that the GOOD STEWARDS logged for 10 days in the
rain to avoid spotted owl surveys. It is one of eight Fisher plans
targetting the last of the big trees in this watershed (the largest
concentration of big trees in the Fishers' holdings). The SIERRA CLUB just
joined the Albion River Watershed Protection Association (ARWPA) as
plaintiffs in a suit accusing CDF of CIVIL CONSPIRACY with regard to this
plan.

-1-98-266. We're going into COURT TODAY to ask for a Temporary Restraining
Order (TRO) on this Redwood Empire plan, which CDF approved, despite 15,000
SIGNATURES on our PETITION protesting it. This plan together with the
Fishers' 1-97-445 plan (see below) constitutes over 1000 ACRES of
HIGH-IMPACT LOGGING directly above and below the only known coho fishery in
a 150-square mile region. PLEASE HOLD GOOD THOTS that we get the TRO!

-1-98-433. It looks like CDF is going to deny this State Lands Commission
plan to log an unentered 60-acre stand of old growth. Thanks in no small
part to a barrage of letters from the public. THREE CHEERS TO ALL OF YOU WHO
WROTE LETTERS!!! THANK YOU!!!

-1-97-445. This Fisher plan includes over 400 ACRES OF CLEARCUTTING directly
above an extremely fragile coho fishery (10 or fewer cited in a 95/96
survey; see above). It is currently one of four Fisher plans named in RCWA
vs. CDF and MRC. The GOOD STEWARDS have been fighting tooth and nail to log
this plan.

Now, if you think that the Fishers calling themselves GOOD STEWARDS is a LOT
of HOOEY (yes, hooey!), then join us at....
