Greetings, California Forest Defenders!

First, some fun news: On Sunday, after the ever popular SF Bay-to-Breakers
race (attracting a crowd of 70,000 this year), a  BI-PLANE with a BANNER
that read *Save the Redwoods - Boycott the Gap* flew over the huge gathering
at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park. THREE CHEERS FOR THE SUPPORTERS WHO
MADE THIS POSSIBLE!!!

Now, here are three things you can do right now to help save California's
forests that will not take you more than a few minutes...

1. Phone Calls Supporting Forest Defense in the Albion
-------------------------------------------------------
The Fishers are not satisfied with simply taking out the last of the marbled
murrelet habitat and coho shade canopy--they have to take it out near slide
areas, threatening to cause avalanches of sediment to pour into the river.
Fisher frontman Sandy Dean refuses to stop cutting near the slide areas,
despite warnings from a registered geologist. That's why 30 protesters met
the loggers at 5 AM, 5 were arrested, and three people are sitting in
trees... For more info call Chris at 707-937-4295.

Please help our fellow activists in the Albion by CALLING the GAP at 800-333-7899 or SANDY DEAN 707-485-8731 or JOHN FISHER 415-288-0549 and telling them the least they can do is not log by slide areas in the Albion! The best they can do is to stop clearcutting, high-grading, cutting old growth and any good MAMU habitat (there's so little left), and spraying garlon.

2. Phone or Email Supporting Forest Reform Bills AB 717 and AB 748
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Assembly Appropriations Committee votes on these important bills THIS
WEDNESDAY. If you haven't already contacted them, please take a moment to
PERSONALIZE (they are sensitive to SPAMMING) the following email and send it

Re: Support for AB 717 and AB 748 (Keeley)

Dear Assemblymember ____________________

Years of liquidation logging in Mendocino County has left the redwood
ecosystem on the verge of collapse there and its endangered species on the
brink of extinction. The timber companies have reaped enormous profits at
the expense of our natural trust resources. They have ignored the Forest
Practice Act mandate to log sustainably—to produce continuous, high quality
yield. They have reduced the ancient forest in Mendocino, which once
occupied a million acres, to a few thousand at best. Coho, which once was
scooped by the wagonload from Elk Creek, Mendocino County are now down to
“10 or fewer” in a 150-square mile region (1995--96 Louisiana-Pacific
survey).

The magnificent redwoods and their rare dependent species—the heroic coho,
the reclusive marbled murrelet, and so many others—are all of California’s
legacy! Serious reform is long overdue to save the little that’s left.

AB 717 is a good first step toward creating some balance between commercial
and environmental goals in our forests. AB 748 saves the State money by
making timber companies pay for their permits like everyone else.

Both these bills have my strong support and I hope they have yours!

Thank you!

Re: Support for SB 390 (Alpert)

Dear Senator _____________________,
I’m writing to let you know that I strongly support SB 390 and urge you to
vote in favor of this bill.

Extending permit and monitoring programs to include some of California’s
worst water polluters, such as agri-business and the timber industry, can
only improve the quality of life for all Californians. Further, exempting
some industries from controls, while thousands of other businesses and
government agencies are obliged to do their share, is simply not fair.

The impacts from these hitherto exempted industries on the environment—for
example, on wetland and forest ecosystems—have been extremely profound. The
sedimentation caused by logging has been a major contributor to the demise
of coho salmon on the redwood coast. This once abundant species is on the
verge of extinction in Mendocino County.

In addition to damaging and destroying ecosystems, the pollution these
industries discharge, including high levels of toxic pesticides, also pose
threats to human health.

You must see the merit in treating all dischargers equally and in tackling
and resolving some of the worst remaining water pollution problems
confronting our state.

Please support SB 390.

Thank you!
