Forest Defenders Across the Land!
It's been nearly 6 weeks since our last newsletter--and a lot is happening:
New CA Dept of Forestry Director Andrea Tuttle is implementing her illegal
policy, "We will not disapprove any THPs!", and CDF is indeed approving one
devastating Timber Harvest Plan after another! It is clear that government
will not intervene in the whole-sale slaughter of our forests: The
corporations--with their imperative to exploit natural and human resources
to the hilt--have bought Republicans and Democrats alike, as witnessed most
recently by the passage of the Quincy Library Bill, CDF's approval on Sep 8
of one of the most notorious Timber Harvest Plans ever submitted (THP
1-97-445 MEN not only "takes" coho, it extiguishes the entire species in 150
sq. mi. region), and the efforts of California's Davis administration to
fast-track his new Forest Practice Rules package which weakens the existing
rules by allowing the killing of endangered species--as the US Fish and
Wildlife Service pointed out in no uncertain terms at the CA Board of
Forestry hearing on Sep 14!
OUR PATH IS CLEAR: WE M-U-S-T MOBILIZE PEOPLE!!!! PLEASE! PLEASE!! PLEASE!!!
Renew your commitment to the forest and to a better world by participating
in as many of the following actions as possible:
-Need a Motivator? Fishers Target Ancient Forest for Clearcutting!!!
-Oct 1: Courthouse Steps Demo Against MRC, G-P, Ukiah
-Oct 6: Old-Growth Press Conference and Rally, Sacramento
-Oct 16--23: ******INTERNAT'L ZAP-THE-GAP WEEK!!!!!!******
-Oct 16: >>>GAP BOYCOTT ANNIVERSARY MARCH & RALLY<<<
****************************************************************************
******
;-) >>>>>>"We'd Rather Wear Nothing Than Wear Gap!!!", SF<<<<<< (-;
****************************************************************************
******
-Oct 20: Sweatshop Fashion Show - Old Navy Opening, SF
-Oct 23: Neighborhood Mobilization Kickoff: Leaflet Your Hood!!!
-Ongoing: Gap Label Campaign: Cut and Send Them Labels!!!!!!
-First Saturdays: Joint-Actions Oct 2, Nov 6, and Onward!
-November: Campaign to Pass CA Forestry Reform Bills 717 & 748!!!
-Nov 5: NRDC Fundraiser Demo!
-Nov 30--Dec 3: RALLY OF THE CENTURY: WTO Millenium Round, Seattle!!!
BE THERE!!! DO IT NOW!!! BE ACTIVE!!! At this dark hour in history, it is
the ONLY way to be!!! ...Otherwise, what will you say to your grandchildren
on that hot, parched, famine-stricken day when they ask, "What did you do to
prevent all this, Gran--what did YOU do in the Eco Wars?!"
Fishers/MRC Target Ancient Forest for Clearcutting!!!
***********************************************************
First, a little something to get you motivated. Just when you thought they
couldn't get much worse...
One picture is worth a thousand words:
http://www.elksoft.com/gwa/ancientforest
We will be posting many more shots of this incredible forest--which is
something out of LEGEND... When Kendrick and I scrambled to the top of Cliff
Ridge, we were awestruck, we did not know that such a forest still existed
in Mendocino: Hundreds of ancient Doug firs up to eight feet in diameter,
dripping with moss; with branches up to three feet in diameter and 20 feet
long... As Kendrick described these trees: "...seeding and seeding around
themselves like true gods." Indeed, the multiple rings of baby firs they
have spawned are 80 feet tall, while the parent trees tower over them
upwards of 200 feet! The entire plan is part of a legacy viewshed, seen from
many striking points along the Philo-Greenwood Road.
Mendocino Redwood Company, the Gap Fishers' liquidation logging company,
recently filed a plan (THP 1-99-339 MEN) that intends to clearcut part of
this magnificent forest. Our photos have temporarily stalled this
unspeakable act, while USFWS checks the area for murrelets and spotted owls.
However, FWS will most likely bend to the prevailing political pressure to
let the goddamn timber companies do whatever they like. If CDF approves this
plan, the only way the Fishers will fell these trees is over my dead
body--that's a promise.
Friday, Oct 1, 12 Noon: Courthouse Steps Demo, Ukiah!
**************************************************************
Let's not take all this destruction lying down! Let's rally and spread the
word: If at all possible, be on the courthouse steps this Friday at 12 Noon
in Ukiah, the Mendocino County seat (on Hwy 101 north of Santa Rosa), to
protest liquidation logging in Mendocino at the hands of the Fishers of Gap,
Inc. and Georgia Pacific!!!
Two of our lawsuits will be heard in court that day: Albion River Watershed
Protection Association vs. CDF, G-P, and Greenwood Watershed Association and
the Elk Water District vs. CDF, MRC. (Both GWA and ARWPA are members of the
Redwood Coast Watersheds Alliance.)
Oct 6: Old-Growth Press Conference and Rally, Sacto!
*************************************************************
On Wed, Oct 6 at 1PM, the CA Board of Forestry will be holding a hearing on
the "Coho Considerations 1999," a set of proposed changes to the Forest
Practice Rules hammered out by environmentalists. Please be there to support
these rules or send in your comments supporting them to the Board by 5 PM,
Oct 4:
Board of Forestry and Fire Protection
Attn: Dennis O. Hall, Regulations Coordinator
1416 Ninth Street, P.O. Box 944246

fax: (916) 653-0989
For more info, check out

At the last BofF hearing on Sep 14, six of us (led by Sue Maloney) stormed
the Governor's office with 2500 hundred signatures demanding he keep his
campaign promise to stop the cutting of old growth in California. On Oct 6,
we plan to have a press conference and action focussing on the same issue.
Time and place TBA. Please contact me if you want to participate in this
action! We'd especially like to see the great Sacto activists on our network
there!
>>>>>>Oct 16--23 INTERNAT'L ZAP-THE-GAP WEEK!!!<<<<<<<
**************************************************************************
THIS IS IT!!! An ENTIRE WEEK celebrating the anniversary of the Gap Boycott
and ESCALATING IT BY AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE-->NOOOOO LESS!!!!!! Please join
us in solidarity by leafletting your local Gap, Banana Republic, or Old Navy
store or tabling on campus!!! Wetlands Preserve in NYC is planning a sister
action--so East Coast activists should consider joining in (212-966-4225 ex.
5)! Of course, EVERYONE is invited to trek on over to San Francisco and join
in our fun and games:
Oct 16: "We'd Rather Wear Nothing Than Wear Gap!" March & Rally, SF
****************************************************************************
****
Sat, Oct 16, 12 noon. Gap Flagship, Market and Powell. In SF, we plan to
kick off Internat'l Zap-the-Gap Week and the Gap Boycott Anniversary with an
eye-catching, MEDIA-GRABBING action, in which daring activists will strip
down to their underwear on cue! From the Gap flagship, we'll march to the
B.R. flagship for a repeat performance! We're planning lots of fun--props,
noisemakers, music, and dance--around this action, as well as a hardhitting
message to the Fishers of Gap Inc. and the people who consume their goods!!!
WE NEED TURN OUT!!! So, Mark Your Calendar, Bring Your Noisemaker, and Be
There to Celebrate the Redwoods and Workers' Rights!!! We also need
volunteers--both dressed and undressed--to help pull off this action! So, if
you want to go that extra mile for the forest and exploited garment workers,
please call (415-731-7924). If you want to do a similar action in your town,
contact me for details! Stand by for updates as the date approaches!!!
Oct 20: Sweatshop Fashion Show - Old Navy Opening, SF
****************************************************************
Weds, Oct 20, 12 Noon. Old Navy Flagship. Market Street near Powell. Forest
Defenders and Human Rights Activists will be celebrating the Grand Opening
of the Old Navy flagship store here in a SF--in our own, special way: with a
sweatshop fashion show!!! So, Bay Area activists, take the day off or spend
your lunch hour with us at the Old Navy on Market near Powell at 12 noon!!!
Oct 23: Neighborhood Action: Leaflet Your Neighbors!!!
*************************************************************
We want to launch a Neighborhood Action Campaign, in which we visit
neighborhoods, starting with our own, going door to door and letting folks
know about the Fishers' deforestation and worker exploitation policies. If
you're shy about ringing a doorbell, you can always just leave a leaflet in
some surprising, cute spot. We have a GREAT quarter-page leaflet that we can
fax or snail-mail!
We did an action in Don Fisher's neighborhood last May--and it was a
refreshing break from the clamor and conspicuous consumption of the shopping
district. The neighbors were all super-receptive, and it felt great. We'd
like to do these actions regularly--third Saturdays--until all our
neighborhoods are aware of the Gap Boycott. If you participate in this
action, please let us know the city and neighborhood you leafleted! Thanks!
Gap Label Campaign: Cut and Send Them Labels!!!
*********************************************************
The Gap Label Campaign is an integral part of Internat'l Zap-the-Gap Week!
We tabled at the Phish concert Sep. 17, and got a great response: quite a
few people ripped out their Gap labels then and there! We'll be sending
these with signed pledges not to shop Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy
until the Fishers change their exploitation policies--and if this doesn't
happen by the end of the year, the signers have pledged never to shop Gap
again! Amen. I made that pledge a long time ago.
Send your labels and pledge to:
The Fishers of Gap, Inc.
C/O Bob Fisher, Gap Inc.
900 Cherry Ave.
San Bruno, CA 94066
First Saturdays: Joint-Actions Oct 2, Nov 6, and Onward!
***************************************************************
Global Exchange is re-launching its First Saturdays Gap leafleting actions
and they have invited environmentalists to join them. I believe these will
be at the Gap flagship at 12 noon, unless announced otherwise. I will be out
of town on Oct 2, and will not be organizing for that initial action.
However, banners, placards, and posters are available to anyone who feels
the irresistible urge to DEMO!
Nov 5. NRDC Fundraiser Demo!
***********************************
Fri. Nov, 5, 6 PM. 888 Brannan. SF. As most of you know, Bob Fisher, an
investor in Mendocino Redwood Company, is also on the Board of Trustees of
the Natural Resources Defense Council. Mark and I had a blast infiltrating
and raining on Bob's phony environmentalist parade at the NRDC benefit last
year at which he was billed as the "Eco-Savior."
This year the theme is Wild California, and I think we'll dress up as the
fish, birds, and redwoods that Bob is liquidating in that little piece of
Wild California he owns: 230,000 acres of our Mendocino and Sonoma county
watersheds!
...They have the audacity to picture a redwood forest on the invitation...
See ya there, Bob!
November: Campaign to Pass CA Forestry Reform Bills 717 & 748!
**************************************************************************
These important forestry reform bills will hit the Assembly floor in
January. Between now and then we need to get our elected reps not only to
vote AYE, but to co-author these bills. If you love the forest, call, write,
email, or fax your rep. Go to http://www.assembly.ca.gov to find out who
your rep is. Following is the Forests Forever breakdown of reps who need
coaxing. PLEASE, if yours is among them, contact him or her and gently
persuade them to do the right thing!

we need 41 ayes votes to pass the assembly floor so there isn't much room
for error or lost votes. the most important work right now needs to be done
in LA and we're working on getting down there for a week per a month until
Dec., but of course local assembly members still need lots of gental
pressure especially from
cat #2 and #3 of the likely ayes with pressure.
