Gap Fishers Ignore Court Ruling & Striking Cambodians!!!
*********************************************************
Watershed groups (Redwood Coast Watersheds Alliance, Greenwood Watershed Association, Guardians of Elk Creek Old Growth) WON two lawsuits against the Gap Fishers' logging company, Mendocino Redwood, and the State Agency--the CA Dept of Forestry--that serves them (and all the Corporate Timber Interests that have lined Gray Davis's campaign coffers). In an obvious POWER PLAY, just 17 days after the judgement was signed, Mendocino Redwood turned around and re-filed one of the timber harvest plans that the Court ruled against. Further, they filed a new logging plan even closer to the endangered coho fishery than yet another plan the Court had shot down.

THEY WANT TO SHOW US WHO'S BOSS: Not the LAW, Not the COURT, Not the PEOPLE,
But the MONEY--and the CORRUPT POLITICIANS who serve it. ***This is why we
will be in L.A. at the DNC: TO END CORPORATE CONTROL OVER PUBLIC POLICY!***

Meanwhile, between 20,000 and 35,000 COURAGEOUS CAMBODIAN workers in 27
sweatshops went on strike for higher pay (from $40 to $70/mo!) and decent
working conditions. All these sweatshops supply mostly upscale retailers,
like Gap, Inc. TRUE TO FORM, Gap initially denied doing any business with
the sweatshops in question--but the facts soon came to light: Gap does
business with at least two of them--June Textile & Trinungal Komura. For
more info contact leila@globalexchange.org . Be at the Lakeshore Gap in
Oakland on July 8 for a GREAT RALLY (see below)!

Pressure on the Gap Fishers is MOUNTING: With BBC internat'l coverage June 5
and 8, the ARRESTS of 18 forest defenders and human rights activists at the
SF Gap flagship June 10, and the ARRESTS of 2 activists for hanging a banner
protesting Fisher deforestation and Gap sweatshops in Cambodia at a Banana
Republic store in NYC June 26! ***THREE CHEERS for these COURAGEOUS
ACTIVISTS!!!*** When will this family bend to the Will of the People and put their ravaged forestlands into a conservation land trust and pay their workers a living wage!? Soon, we hope! We will keep the pressure escalating until they do!

BOYCOTT GAP, BANANA REPUBLIC, & OLD NAVY!!!

July 6, SF. Local 250 Strikes! March from Ferry Building to Market!
********************************************************************
July 6th, 1 pm Rally, 3 pm March. Ferry Building. Local 250 is going on
strike (ten Bay Area hospitals) for more participation in patient care. Huge
rally and march from the Ferry Building to Market and Montgomery! Support
the workers! For more info, call Sandra Weese at 510-869-2207.

July 8, Oak: Rally Against Gap & Prison Sweatshops!!!
*******************************************************
12 NOON. 3229 Lakeshore Ave. (corner of Trestle Glen) in Oakland, near Lake
Merrit BART station. The rally will feature Company of Prophets, Rebecca
Kaplan, Oakland Living Wage Coalition, Third Eye Movement (510 and 415),
AIWA (Asian Immigrant Woman Advocates) and many others! Contact Charlie at
Global Exchange for more info: 1.800.497.1994 ext. 355 eatoncharlie@aol.com
WE'D LIKE TO HAVE A FOREST PRESENCE AT THIS DEMO, TOO! Please contact
chalicenew@earthlink.net 415-731-7924 if you want to help with a banner and
leafleting!

July 12, Ukiah: Protest the Logging of JACKSON STATE FOREST!
************************************************************
12 NOON. Ukiah Valley Conference Center. 200 South School Street, Ukiah.
(Standby, there could be a time/place change). The Board of Forestry is
meeting in Ukiah to oversee their demolition plans for Jackson State Forest
in Mendocino County. This forest constitutes some of the very last viable
redwood forest habitat in the entire County. Up until two years ago, the
State (CA Dept of Forestry) logged it to SUBSIDIZE the multi-billion dollar
timber industry's permit processing! (HOW'S THAT FOR CORPORATE CONTROL OF
PUBLIC POLICY?!). This subsidy is now coming from the state's general fund.

The State also recently sold a piece of Jackson State Forest to the GAP
FISHERS, who, TRUE TO FORM, are taking out EVERY BIG TREE in sight--the
CHAINSAWS are buzzing in Hare Creek right now. Further, the State just filed
and approved its own plan to aggressively log 18,000 acres of this mature
second-growth and scattered old growth forest. JOIN THE MOVEMENT TO MAKE
JACKSON STATE FOREST A PARK http://www.jacksonforest.com/ ...out of reach
of the mindless, heartless political lackeys at CDF.

July 13, SF: Protest Unbridled Development and Gentrification!
**************************************************************
July 13, 1 PM, City Hall. Rally to stop the gentrification and unbridled
development that is pushing low income people and small businesses out of
the City! The Bryant Square atrocity is drawing huge numbers of community
people from the Mission. Rally at City Hall to challenge the planning
commission! Support the Latino, African-American, working class, youth, SRO,
non-profit, activist, and artist community!

....On July 10 (mon) and July 12 (wed) 6 pm,  Art and Revolution will be
helping to organize some puppet building/art making evenings to support the
Mission community efforts against gentrification. Call to confirm time (415)
339-7801, at the historic Labor Temple - Red Stone Building (16th/Capp),
which is also endangered.

July 20, Sac: Citizens Board of Forestry: ON TRIAL!!!
*****************************************************
8:30 AM. Sacramento Superior Court, 720 9th Street. Sac. YES! The NINE
ACTIVISTS who were arrested on March 14 for speaking the truth for more than
3 minutes at a Board of Forestry hearing are going on trial! The DA has got
to show us that the WILL of the PEOPLE does not mean jack compared to the
MONEY of the CORPORATIONS--that the GRAY DAVIS ADMINISTRATION will not be
MOCKED for PEDDLING ITS INFLUENCE (the DA waved the Chronicle photo of Gray
in Bed with Big Timber under our attorney's nose)!

***GOOD LUCK, MR. D.A: We will fight you, the Corporate Timber Interests,
and the State that does their bidding for $$$ over the Good of the Planet
and the Will of the People until we win!!!***  Stand by for what you can do
to support these Intrepid Forest Crusaders! ...AND BE IN L.A. AUGUST
14--17!!!!

JOIN the SRBG AFFINITY GROUP!!!
********************************
If you are not already part of an affinity group (AG) going to the DNC
Protests in L.A., this is an invitation to you to join the Save the
Redwoods - Boycott the Gap (SRBG) AG! If you are not familiar with our
kick-ass campaign, please visit www.gapsucks.org . We are all volunteer and
completely unfunded--and therefore free to be as RADICAL, POLITICALLY
INCORRECT, and CREATIVE as we please, and as a result we have garnered
significant international media attention on the environmental and social
justice issues for which we are crusading.

Though our primary focus is to pressure the Fishers of Gap, Inc. to put the
230,000 acres of redwood forestland they are destroying into a conservation
land trust (we're getting there!), we are also dedicated to stopping
corporate exploitation of planet and people worldwide, including sweatshops
(Gap sweatshops naturally figure highly in all our outreach efforts),
institutionalized racism and cruelty (we are currently filing state and
federal lawsuits against the Sacramento County Jail for gross violations of
human rights), free trade (mass direct action--we were in Seattle and DC,
check out www.gapsucks.org, letter-writing campaigns, political lobbying),
and so on.

If being part of this AG appeals to you or if your AG would like to cluster
with ours in L.A. for further adventures in democracy, please contact
chalicenew@earthlink.net 415-731-7924 for more info.
