Boycott the Gap: Chainsaws! And Clearcuts! And Greed! OH MY!!!
Posted by Mary Bull (chalicenew@earthlink.net)
Tuesday, September 19, 2000
Forest Defenders & Social Justice Activists Around the Globe!
The Gap Fishers--with their 12.5 billion dollars--had been confident that
they could crush all opposition to their liquidation of the redwood forest
in Mendocino and Sonoma Counties: They have bought the silence of many
non-profits, they have put enormous resources into a greenwashing campaign,
they even may succeed in buying green-label certification, while mercilessly
escalating logging, including 5 ILLEGAL PLANS (I reconned one of them
yesterday) and a 547-ACRE CLEARCUT ("seed tree removal"--the final phase of
a two phase clearcut, which removes all the remaining big trees!) JUST
FILED...
******BUT THEY ARE LOSING THIS BATTLE!!!*****
GAP STOCK value has been PLUMMETING -- by 50% since April alone! -- and
POWERFUL ALLIES continue to join us: PUBLIC MEDIA CENTER -- the
brilliant, progressive ad company that designed and wrote our Fisher
deforestation ad gratis; A SPECIAL FRIEND who paid for the second run of the
ad (yesterday); BONNIE RAITT, who came out publicly against the Gap
at our Forest Rally in L.A. on Aug 14, AND WE, Of Course -- the ever growing
number of GRASSROOTS ACTIVISTS WHO CANNOT BE BOUGHT
& WHO WILL NOT STAND BY AND WATCH OUR FORESTS DIE!!!
The Fishers are pulling out all the stops to stop us now! They did not like
the New York Times ad we ran August 15 -- it caused DON FISHER to write a
long greenwash letter to all Gap employees on August 16 -- the first
time to our knowledge that he has openly admitted his investment in the
logging venture. There have been threats, and letters, and phone calls...
OUR RESPONSE??? ESCALATE!!! Now is the time to INCREASE THE PRESSURE on the
Fishers to do the right thing: Put this forestland into a conservation land
trust, Pay their workers a living wage!
The SECOND AD came out yesterday. Further, We are calling on All ACTIVISTS
on our Net to join us in SOLIDARITY ACTIONS against the GAP on the weekend
of Oct 1, and on all Northern California Forest Defenders to join us for our
WIZARD of SACTO action in SF & Sacramento on Tuesday, Oct 3, part of a 3-day

Stop PL Logging Ancient Doug Fir in the Mattole!
******************************************************
From EPIC: " Headwaters Deal 'Sacrifice Zone' Clearcutting Imminent.
Maxxam/Pacific Lumber (PL) intends to begin clearcutting the second largest
intact stand of contiguous lowland old-growth Douglas Fir in California -
Rainbow Ridge in the Mattole River watershed of the Lost Coast. This logging
will fragment 3,000 acres of ancient forests by clearcutting 250 acres in 29
units spread throughout the North Fork Mattole basin. This is the first of
the so-called "sacrifice zones" in which PL is allowed, under the terms of
the Headwaters Deal Habitat Conservation Plan to ignore the Endangered
Species Act (ESA)...."
You can either politely tell our bought Governor that this illegal travesty
MUST STOP (voice: 916-445-6131 Fax: 916-445-4633), citing THPs 1-98-260,
1-99-475, 1-00-020, 1-00-031, 1-00-218, and 1-00-342, OR you can join
activists in the woods (Mattole Forest Defenders: 707-441-3828)!
Support CA Anti-WTO Bills!
******************************
The following bills passed the state legislature. Please contact Davis and
ask him to sign them into law (fax 916.445.4633 or
gray.davis@governor.ca.gov ); cc Senator Tom Hayden (fax 916.324.4823 or
annabella_blue@yahoo.com) :
SB 1516 - This bill is intended to provide greater information to the public
and the Legislature of the ongoing and often adverse impacts of trade
agreements negotiated by the US Government on California environmental laws
and regulations. It requires the State Secretary for Environmental
Protection and the Secretary of the State Resources Agency to review and
assess existing and proposed trade agreements for the legislature and the
public on a regular and consistent basis.
SB 1566 - This bill is similar to SB 1516 in that it requires the Director
of Industrial Relations to review and assess any existing or proposed trade
agreement that would adversely affect California laws and regulations
governing wages, working conditions and workplace health and safety for the
legislature and the public.
SB 1888 - Existing law prohibits state agency procurement contracts that use
equipment, materials or supplies produced by forced labor, convict labor or
indentured labor. SB 1888 would require the prohibition to include abusive
forms of child labor or sweatshop labor.
Stop Inhuman Cruelty to Prisoners in PA!

A plea for help from Craig Williams on death row at SCI Greene in
Waynesburg, PA:
>TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: We capital cases at SCI Greene stand 45 strong on a
hunger strike that has been going on since 8/24/00. We are prepared to go
out of here in body bags unless they force-feed us to stay alive. We are on
strike to disclose the punitive policies here when we broke no rule or
regulations. We are forced under "hole" status when we don't have a
misconduct. The restrictive policy that we are under is for inmates who
break the rules.
>We seek your assistance by flooding the Governor's office, Secretary Horn's
office with phone calls or faxes requesting that they meet with us to
resolve this issue. We demand our own policy for capital cases so we won't
be harassed and oppressed by the prison administration. We request total
access to our property, to be placed in our cell. We request one legal phone
call per week. We request disposable inserts for our food trays so we won't
be forced to eat off the surface of those filthy dirty trays... We seek the
removal of Major Hussette; Unit Manager Keith Warman; Sgt. Haywood; C.O. 1
Melmsky; and C.O. 1 Matthews. These are the individuals who led us to
hunger-strike.

Demand Sanctions on Japan for Killing Whales!
****************************************************
From SEA SHEPHERD INTERNATIONAL:
PRESIDENT CLINTON: WIN THIS ONE FOR THE WHALES.
U.S. must defy WTO threat and sanction Japan. Secretary of Commerce Norman
Mineta's decision yesterday (9/13) to clear the way for President Clinton to
embargo Japanese fishery products in response to Japan's expanding
"research" whale hunt has put the Clinton Administration in a
fish-or-cut-bait position. Japan has threatened to file a complaint against
the U.S. at the World Trade Organization should Clinton levy trade
sanctions....
