Forest Defenders and Social Justice Activists Around the Globe,

The World-wide Mobilization to End Corporate Rule is happening on many fronts: At the global trade policy level, we are powerfully challenging Corporate Capital's outrageous schemes to further exploit people and planet--including their most recent bid for dominance of the Western Hemisphere through the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)--the most exploitative trade agreement to date. At the same time, we are creating a Global Community based on democracy, justice, and shared human values. THOUSANDS will be protesting the FTAA in Quebec City and THROUGHOUT THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE on April 21 (see www.stopftaa.org for details)!!!

***JOIN US at the San Diego/Tijuana BORDER MASS ACTION to STOP the FTAA and BUILD CROSS-BORDER SOLIDARITY on April 21--or join in one of the many other solidarity actions happening throughout the Americas, such as those on April 20 and 21 in San Francisco (details below)!!! Join the GAPATISTAS on EARTH DAY, April 22, for a Combo Gap/FTAA Action at Balboa Park in San Diego (details below)!!!***

Now more than ever, we need to wrest government, public policies, institutions, services, and resources from corporate control. Until we do, we can VOTE WITH OUR CONSUMER DOLLARS: BOYCOTT these conscienceless corporations, until they change their policies of exploitation and destruction: Gap, Nike, Disney, Staples, Chevron, Shell, Unocal, Monsanto, Bechtel, PG&E.... Making any one of these corporate exploiters accountable through public pressure would be an UNPARALLELED VICTORY for People and Planet, and will SOUND a WAKE-UP CALL to all the rest!!!

***JOIN GAP CAMPAIGN 2001 (see www.gapsucks.org for details)--and target YOUR neighborhood Gap stores during EARTH WEEK, APR 22--APR 29 (details below)--and throughout 2001!!! With Gap profits at an all-time low, we can win for redwoods and workers this year!!! ***

THREE MIGHTY CHEERS FOR THESE INSPIRING UK GAPTIVISTS!!!***

***NEWS FLASH: Activists in the US and Canada engaged in creative, non-violent protests on April 2, demanding the release of the FTAA text, which has been developed in secret by 500 corporations and a bevy of un-elected trade ministers. In SF, Robin Hood and his Merry Folk halted business-as-usual at Bank of America, and SHUT DOWN the Pacific Stock Exchange, righteously declaring that the FTAA takes from the poor and gives to the rich, while 400 Canadians shut down the entire foreign ministry in Ottawa, Canada!!! These actions, and those that preceded them, have not gone for naught: The text was finally released last week***

Public Power Campaign Planning Meeting!!!
*************************************************
Apr 16, SF. Now's your chance to join this critical campaign which is all about public control of public resources and policies--what we're fighting for on the global front when we fight corporate control and the FTAA, and what we're fighting for in the forest against corporate interests like the Fishers of Gap, Inc!!! Since this battle affects everyone, immediately, in the wallet--we have a good chance of winning it, and creating a change in consciousness, a move away from the commodification of life!!! City Blend Cafe on 16th Street between Valencia and Mission, 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

SHOWDOWN with Gap Fisher Logging Company, MRC!!!
****************************************************************
Tuesday, April 17th. Bending to intense public pressure, the chief forester of the Gap Fishers' liquidation logging company, Mendocino Redwood, has agreed to meet with residents and other forest defenders who are outraged over the Fishers' plans to de-forest (they are high-grading as usual: taking all the biggest trees--the last viable forest habitat) Enchanted Meadow, an area that the community has successfully fought to protect for over a decade! If at all possible, BE THERE TO SPEAK TRUTH TO THE ALMIGHTY BUCK--the people who would destroy our redwood forests forever for short-term profits!!! 7 P.M. Albion School and Community Center- 3 miles up Albion Ridge Road, Albion, Mendocino County. For further information call Linda Perkins @ 707-937-0903 or Sal Eggleston @ 707-937-0525.

***The magnificent Coast Redwood ecosystem, with trees that grow to 20 feet in diameter and over 300 feet tall, only exists on a narrow 35-mile strip from the Oregon border to Big Sur. These forests should be designated a World Legacy, but instead they are being destroyed for quick profits by the likes of Donald Fisher of the Gap and Charles Hurwitz of the Junk Bond Scam.*** For more info about other ways you can help stop this outrage and tragedy, contact chalicenew@earthlink.net 415-731-7924.

Public Power Community Forum with PUC Commissioner
***************************************************************
Wednesday, April 18, SF. 7pm Cesar Chavez Elementary School, 825 Shotwell Street (between 22nd and 23rd Streets). The Campaign for Public Power invites you to a community meeting with Public Utilities Commissioner Jeffrey Brown, who voted last week to hike rates by 40%. The PUC is now discussing who to make pay the new rates. This will be one of the few opportunities for people to tell the PUC how this rate hike will hurt them. We need to let the PUC know that we can't pay the new rates, before they meet on April 19 to impose the new rate schedule.

The Campaign is asking for anyone and everyone to come testify before the Commissioner about the impact the rate hikes will have on their lives. Bring your PG&E bills! If you'd like to testify or would like to help publicize the event, please call or email Todd Chretien at 510-333-4604 or chretientodd@aol.com to make sure you get on the list. If your community group, union, church or organization would like to be represented, please call or email as well.

Fight the FTAA at the National Level: Contact Your Reps!!!
*****************************************************************
Contact Your US Reps and tell them to Say NO to FTAA & FAST TRACK. What is Fast Track? "...fast-track authority is the legislative tool that Mr. Bush will need to negotiate a comprehensive trade deal. Under fast track, trade deals are brought to Congress for approval only when complete. Congress then votes on the agreement without having the chance to add
amendments that suit the needs and wishes of individual members." (NY Times). (Note that clever Dubya has renamed "fast track, "Presidential Trade Promotion Authority"--but he didn't fool us!). Bay Area swing votes include: Nancy Pelosi (SF), Ellen Tauscher (East Bay), Anna Eshoo (Peninsula), Mike Honda (Peninsula/San Jose) -- new, Zoe Lofgren (San Jose). Email Nancy Pelosi at sf.nancy@mail.house.gov. Email Dianne Feinstein at senator@feinstein.senate.gov and Barbara Boxer at senator@boxer.senate.gov.
